Born in 1926, Joan grew up in Northampton and after leaving school she joined the theatre with her sister and danced on the stages of the New Theatre and Royal Theatre before going on to tour with the LA Angels as the Carlton Sisters.
During her stage days she also got to work with the then little known Des O'Conner - she would often tell the tale of how he wanted to date her but she turned him down - we never knew if the stories were true but they were at least entertaining. Joan also helped out with the choreography for many pantomines in the Northampton theatres.
Joan married and had 5 children - Dennis, Geoffrey, Gloria, Trevor and Anthony. After many years of marriage, Joan divorced and eventually left Northampton to move to Mablethorpe, a place where she had been working at during recent summer months and a place where she had made many friends.
With the move to Mablethorpe all her children and grandchildren now had a place to visit for their summer holidays and I can remember many happy trips to Mablethorpe during my childhood - the long walks across the beach, the caravan parks and even the two ankle bitting dogs Nan had which we would walk along the beach - Mablethorpe may not be the best coastal resort in the UK but we had our Nan there and it was always a fun time.
After retirement Joan moved back to Northampton to be closer to her family. I'd visit her at the weekends and every week she would complain about the rubbish on TV and then read out the TV listings to me - even though it was the same programs every week - that was Sunday for me and having lost my other grand parents last year, Sundays will never be the same again.
Joan led a fun life and was a happy soul, despite being diagnosed with both throat and later breast cancer she refused to give in to either of them and beat them both. She even battled through the heartache of losing one of her sons to a sudden heart attack several years back but sadly she passed away on March 29th 2008 after suffering a heart attack during the night. She will be missed by all who she leaves behind - 4 children, 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren not to mention a living room filled with dancing, singing stuffed toys which is what I will remember the most about her.
A remarkable women
As the one year anniversary of my grandmothers death arrives I find myself sitting here thinking of all the funny moments we had and all the constant reminders there are of her.
The other week I was at my mothers and a TV show was on starring Sean Bean and it reminded me of how nan always insisted Sean was pronounced Seen as it's Bean with an S at the beginning. We never could convince her otherwise.
Then there was last week whilst clearing out the food cupboard where we found we still had PG Tips left from over a year ago - it was impossible to visit Nan without leaving with a box of PG Tips and a bag of sugar. Whilst the sugar ran out months ago the Tea bags are still going strong and will probably last into early 2010.
One thing which is clear, you don't really appreciate the things in life until they are gone as it's only then that you miss them and realise how those simple little things like Tea Bags on a Sunday made up an important part of your life. Whilst tea bags come and go, family remain forever and this is one lady who will never be forgotten.
